Superintendent's Message - August 12, 2022

Dear D53 Families and Staff:

I hope that you and your families have enjoyed the summer months. We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 for the first day of school at both buildings. Building principals will resume their regular communication with their respective families this week and share relevant information on the start of the school year. We are looking forward to another fantastic school year ahead.

Construction at both of our buildings has continued throughout these past several months and we are excited for you to see the progress that has been made to enhance our physical footprint.

The Fiscal Year 2023 Tentative Budget has been posted for viewing. There will be a public hearing on September 12, 2022 in relation to the Fiscal Year 2023 Tentative Budget. The Board of Education is scheduled to take action/adopt the budget that same evening.

The Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, August 8, 2022. At that meeting, the Board of Education approved moving forward with an intergovernmental agreement between the District 53 Board of Education and the Village of Oak Brook for one auxiliary Oak Brook Police Department officer for enhanced security and presence on student attendance days, as an additional school safety measure.

The Board of Education will hold all regular, and committee monthly meetings in-person at the district’s Administration Building (2801 York Road) boardroom. Furthermore, an audio streaming link will be provided for community members to listen live to the Board of Education regular monthly meetings. This audio streaming link is in addition to the current practice of posting the audio recordings of the meetings on the District 53 website.

Additionally, the Board of Education reviewed the 2022-2023 Transportation Update, which detailed the comparison between last year's bus routes and this year's, as well as an overview of key changes to the transportation schedule. Mr. John Hamilton, who manages the district transportation program, will communicate directly with families who utilize district transportation. First Student, our transportation partner will be running practice runs of all routes next week.

Stay well, be safe, and enjoy these final days of summer!

Dr. Paul O'Malley
