Letter to Families and Staff 8.21.20

Dear Butler D53 Families and Staff,

As I reflect on this past week and Teacher Institute Days, I am inspired to say once again, how appreciative the district is of our staff and our community. It was refreshing to see our teachers in the buildings after such a long period of time. I could feel the synergy among all. The comradery of staff between grades, subjects, administrators, and schools is a key component to our success as a district. Our expectations for this year are high and we plan to exceed them.

We know the year will not unfold perfectly. There might be a few bumps in the road along the way; however, we are ready to respond and smooth them out as necessary.

A lot of thought, consideration, hours, planning, and teamwork has allowed us to continue our exemplary cadence in teaching the students of Butler D53. I want to specifically acknowledge those involved in creating our schedules.

With principal input, assistant principal and 5th grade teacher at Brook Forest Elementary School, Lisa Owen, meticulously created a schedule for K-5 that fits the curriculum and allows for adherence to guidelines coupled with parallel instruction for our students learning remotely.

Butler Junior High School assistant principal, Melissa Zaniewski, with principal collaboration, researched, brainstormed, and created a unique schedule for our junior high students that allows for minimal hallway transitions, optimizing instructional time within the perimeters of guidelines, and offers engagement for student learning remotely.

This was not an easy task, but was an integral part of reopening, and an example of collaboration.

Whether you are a teacher, student, or parent, you are the foundation of Butler D53. Whether you call yourself a Brook Forest Dolphin or a Butler Viking; we are one force moving in the right direction.

We look forward to beginning the new school year Beyond All Limits on Monday. Enjoy your weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Paul O'Malley
Superintendent of Schools
