May 22, 2020 Letter to Families and Staff

Dear Butler School District 53 Families and Staff,

I want to wish staff, students, and the Butler D53 community a safe, and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day is a way to honor those in the armed forces who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Traditions have changed over the years. It is also the official-unofficial day that signifies that summer has arrived. There are many ways to celebrate Memorial Day weekend - even during the quarantine. 1) Barbeque and try new recipes. 2) Appreciate the outdoors by going for a bike ride or hike. 3) How about trying your hand at fishing?  4) Binge watch a series with your family. 5) Organize a virtual party and reconnect with distant school friends and/or relatives. 6) Chalk art has been very popular; the entire family can participate and the community reaps the benefits.

Tomorrow, May 23 beginning at 10:00AM a parade will take place to honor all Oak Brook graduates. The information has been sent out to the community. To recap, the graduates will be in the cars. The procession of cars begins by heading south on Regent Dr. (passing Brook Forest Elementary), east on 31st street, and then north on York Rd. They will pass Butler Junior High, continue on and enter York Woods at the Dover entrance, taking that to Windsor, where the route ends. There are many places to stand and cheer-on the cavalcade of vehicles filled with students of honor. I am looking forward to this meaningful and memorable event.

Any way you choose to spend your three-day weekend, it is important to please always follow social distance protocol, and be sure to wear a mask when in public areas. We are Butler D53 Strong, and in this together.

Stay well, be safe -

Dr. Paul O’Malley
Superintendent of Schools
