PARCC Results Released

Butler District 53 students fared very well on the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams given for the first time last year. Superintendent Dr. Heidi Wennstrom said she was pleased with the results, which were released publicly today (Dec. 11) by the Illinois State Board of Education. The District 53 scores were among the top of schools in the state. Additionally, at all grade levels tested (grades 3-8) 100 percent of Butler District 53 students met or exceeded expectations in literacy/language arts. Similarly, high scores were posted in math, where only one percent of students in grade 4 scored at level 3 – meaning they “approached expectations.” “These test scores show a very positive picture of student learning,” said Wennstrom. “We will continue to focus on pathways for improvements in curriculum and instruction to ensure each child achieves their personal academic best for themselves and their community.” Butler District 53 scores have consistently ranked among the top three in the state in the last 10 years. The PARCC assessment, administered for the first time last school year, tested students in grades 3-8 in math, English and language arts. The PARCC test replaced the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Because it is the first year of the test, it will be considered baseline data and as a result can’t be compared to past years, said Wennstrom. However, she said, the PARCC results are just one data piece among many assessments that help the District analyze its curriculum, instruction and student learning. Students’ exam scores earned them one of five performance levels – Level 1 – did not yet meet expectations; Level 2 – partially met expectations; Level 3 – approached expectations; Level 4 – met expectations; Level 5: exceeded expectations. Students who earned Level 4 or 5 were considered prepared for the next grade level and on track for college and careers. “We have an amazing school community,” said Wennstrom. “Students come ready to learn, parents are committed to their child’s education, our teachers are extraordinary and our administration and Board are committed to continuous improvement.” She added, “We are very grateful for the support of a learning environment that helps our kids be so successful.” Individual student reports will be mailed to families on Dec. 11.
