Ms. Christa Chipman

Bio:

September 2004 marks my first year as a full-time educator here at Brook Forest School, however I'm not new to education. I've been in elementary education since 1999. I've served as a substitute and permanent substitute, with Cass District #63 in Darien, IL. I've also taught 2nd and 3rd grade as a long-term maternity leave substitute teacher in the Hinsdale District #181 community.
Previous to teaching, I've worked as a parent volunteer and a children's camp youth group director. It was during these times that the teaching "bug" took hold! There's so much to learn together. It's a joy working with young children every day.
Teaching isn't the only love I have. I also have three wonderful boys! I love virtually any type of outdoor activity, sport or game.

Education:

I received my B.A. in Communications from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL. From there, I was fortunate to study at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, where I obtained my teacher's certification and Master of Arts in Education Degree.

Goal:

Being a teacher guarantees new and exciting challenges every day. I love teaching primary students because they are eager to learn, curious about their world, and always anxious to get started! Helping them grow is the most rewarding part of my journey. My goal has always been to teach children by example. Some aspire to be a teacher; however I aspire to be a toucher. Teachers give examples; I want to be an example. Some are interested in teaching; I want to be an interesting teacher. Some teachers demand answers to questions; I encourage questions to the answers. All in all, I believe teaching and learning is a life-long process.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

There are three main reasons why I became a teacher. First, teaching is "in my blood!" Both of my parents are educators and they have been an excellent example of what teachers are all about.
Second, I wasn't the best reader when I was young and I remember a teacher asking me in front of the class, "Christa, why can't you read like everyone else?" I remember the embarrassment I felt and I vow never to embarrass a student like I was embarrassed, but rather I vow to give them the tools they need to become a successful reader.
Finally, I teach because it's so fulfilling and such a worth-while endeavor. My favorite quote is, "A mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions." It's time for new dimensions!
