OVERVIEW OF THE GUIDANCE PROGRAM:
I teach a variety of grade-level guidance lessons which have been developed to fit the developmental level of each grade and offer a new set of challenges from which students can learn valuable lessons and coping skills. Each grade level curriculum has a unique focus and is able to accommodate any relevant issues which may arise during the course of a school year. A variety of topics are addressed, such as adjusting to school, problem solving skills, working together, bullying issues, goal setting, study/test taking skills, character education, social skills, career awareness, and easing the transition to middle school.
We utilize "the award-winning SECOND STEP violence prevention program, which integrates social and emotional learning with academics." Students in Grades preschool through Grade 8 "learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, and cooperation. These essential life skills help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. The SECOND STEP program is research-based and educators using the program report reductions in discipline referrals, improvement in their school climate, heightened feelings of inclusiveness and respect, and an increase in the sense of confidence and responsibility in their students." As a social worker, I am part of the Student Support Team, and as such, I consult with parents, teachers, special education faculty, and administrators in order to best meet the needs of our children. I meet with students individually or in groups to address personal issues, school-related problems, interpersonal relationships, decision-making, among many other topics. Students may be seen upon parent request, teacher suggestion, or self-referral. Confidentiality is an important part of a counseling relationship and gives students the opportunity to express themselves in a safe environment. Students are encouraged to share at home what they have learned or discussed in guidance, or in individual or group counseling sessions. Parent permission is required before beginning continual individual or group counseling sessions.
