The Butler Junior High Bayla Gershowitz Library and Media Center provides students with the resources and instruction they need in order to become independent and effective users of ideas and information. By integrating the library/media center's many resources with the curriculum, our students' learning experiences become richer and more complete. We are committed to promoting literacy and a love of reading in each and every child. Our literature is carefully selected to match the needs of our students here at Butler. It is the goal of the library to be the heart of the school and to provide resources and activities that contribute to lifelong learning.
About the Library
The Butler Junior High Library print collection contains over 7,000 books, 16 periodicals, and two daily newspapers as well as one local weekly newspaper. There are five networked computers and five additional lap top computers available for student use. The Dell Lab is connected to the library so students have easy access to more computers. Our library subscribes to seven excellent online databases. The databases can be accessed through the library link.
The library is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The library is available to our students before school in the morning, after lunch, and during study period with a pass from their teacher. Students are allowed to check out a book for two weeks. Overdue fines are not collected, however if a book is lost or damaged the student will be charged so that the book can be replaced. There is a full-time librarian available to help the students at all times.
The Butler Book Club meets most Fridays throughout the school year. We offer grade level clubs, as well as Fantasy and Historical Fiction Book Clubs. Students are encouraged to join at least one book club, with many students choosing to join more! This is a time for students to discuss different genres of literature, while relaxing with friends. The library also offers special programs throughout the year for all our students to enjoy.
